Federal Tax Incentives for Solar Energy, Wind,
Renewables & Energy Efficiency
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 extended many consumer tax incentives originally introduced in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT) and amended in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-343).
ABOUT TAX CREDITS
A tax credit is generally more valuable than an equivalent tax deduction because a tax credit reduces tax dollar-for-dollar, while a deduction only removes a percentage of the tax that is owed. Consumers can itemize purchases on their federal income tax form, which will lower the total amount of tax they owe the government.
The Economic Stimulus Bill signed into law on February 17th, 2009 has resulted in several important new incentives and measures to stimulate energy efficiency and solar, wind and other renewable energy development, manufacturing, installation and operation in the United States.
To see a summary of many of the tax credits available to consumers, go to:
Florida State Energy Initiatives
The Florida Energy & Climate Commission is the primary organization for state energy and climate change programs and policies. The Commission is responsible for administering financial incentive programs, completing annual assessments of Florida's Energy and Climate Change Action Plan, and providing recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature. The Commission also helps develop state energy and climate change policies and programs.
Solar Estimator
Our Solar & Wind Estimator, driven by Energy Matters, includes these solar and wind incentives and many others. Use it to calculate the cost savings you can realize now by installing a solar or wind energy system of your own.
Energy Star Tax Credits
The Energy Star program also has information related to tax credits for consumers (home improvements, cars, solar energy systems, fuel cells), tax credits for home builders, and tax deductions for commercial buildings.
There are also several provisions designed to help ease financing of systems, promote training and job creation, manufacturing investments.
DSIRE: Database of State Incentives
for Renewables & Efficiency
There are many state, federal and local incentives available to help pay for the cost of installing renewable energy systems.
Energy Efficiency Home
To help homeowners take advantage of the energy efficiency tax credits, the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) has created a special tax credits Web site. ASE has also issued state-by-state energy saving tips for 37 states and the District of Columbia, and has published a free consumer booklet of energy saving tips called "Power$mart: The Power Is In Your Hands."
